sycamore q + a {no.63}: Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked

Susan Petersen, who runs a blog and sewn goods company under the name Freshly Picked, has enviable skills. Sewing skills. Upholstery skills. Decorating skills. Blogging skills... She's one of the creative people I've been lucky enough to meet since moving back to Utah last year. And I'm pretty excited to share this little q & a with you.

1) How did you become an artist?

I've always been creating.  My mom told me once that if she didn't know where I was, she could just follow a trail of projects through the house + there I would be.  My mom sewed all of mine + my siblings clothes when we were younger, whipping piles of clothes together without a pattern.  She would never let me touch her machine.  However about 4 years ago, I started sewing + because of the daring confidence I saw in her sewing, I've never thought I couldn't make something.  I will usually just go for it.  Sometimes things don't turn out, but most of the time, I will tweak them until they do.

2) What's been inspiring you lately?

Recently, I've been inspired by bows, sequins, stripes, long hair, high buns, linen, geometric shapes, the way the light comes into my studio in the afternoon, long drives in the mountains, bridges + structured jackets.

3) Tell us about a recent project.

My husband + I recovered an 8 1/2 foot couch.  We've always dreamed of having a long couch, but have either been frustrated by the price or the quality.  When I found the perfect size couch at the thrift store, we just decided to tackle it ourselves.  We took a class through our local community ed program + ended up with a couch that we love + are mighty proud of.  We made a time lapse video of the entire process.

4) Is there anything else we should know about you?

I love thrifting.  I have an unhealthy collection of mirrors, chairs + moccasins.  I love diet soda.  I spend way too much money on shampoo + I only shampoo my hair every three days.  I don't have a dishwasher + I actually don't mind washing dishes by hand.  I make my bed every day.  I have an affinity for motivational quotes.  Ab-Fab is one of my all time favorite shows.  I get easily obsessed with almost any reality show.  I especially love love love Project Runway.  I love children + my husband!

Thanks Susan!

sycamore street press: Midway Swiss Days

Hey Utahns -- we'll have a booth in Swiss Days this Friday and Saturday, and we'd love for you to come. We're pretty excited to be in a show in our own little mountain valley!

We've been busy little bees making lots of pretty letterpress goodies to sell. Along with our tried and true items (like the ones below), we'll be debuting a brand new type of product! (I'll let the rest of you in on the secret next week...) And as with all our shows, we'll have special deals on just about everything.

looking lovely: Frost River Bags

Highway 1 Panniers

Kirk just showed me these beautiful bags by Fox River that he spotted on A Continuous Lean. Made of waxed canvas and leather to stand up to the elements, these bags will stand up to years of use. If I could find a nice diaper bag among them,  I know I wouldn't have much trouble persuading Kirk to carry it.

on the road: San Francisco Facades

I love how big cities can have so many distinct personalities.
This time we stayed with our friend Ashleigh in the Tenderloin.
Here are a few pics from previous trips to the Bay area.

The view from her window reminded us all of Jimmy Stewart's view in Rear Window. But unlike Jimmy, we didn't solve any mysteries.

sycamore street press: I don't want to give this up!

I really wish we could teach letterpress workshops more often. It's so nice when other people appreciate and want to learn more about what you do for a living, you know? Everyone who comes to our classes as such positive, creative energy. It gets me even more excited about what Kirk and I do!

The class on Saturday just flew by... and although we're not completely sure we'll be able to host workshops in our new space, we're going to do everything we can to make it work. I'll keep you posted here on the blog, but you can also join our email list (in the sidebar) and opt in to the "class" list.

Thanks to everyone who has attended a class and/or helped spread the word!

looking lovely: Papier Mache

Photo by Ana Schechter / Styled by Katelyn Mooney for Papier Mache

Have you seen the latest issue of Papier Mache? They're so adept at keeping children's style adorable without falling into sugary cuteness.

How was your weekend? Kirk and I had such a great time teaching the letterpress class on Saturday. Everyone who came was so nice and enthusiastic about this craft we practice... it put me in such a good mood. I'll try and post a few pics later...
